Marc Marenco

Marc Marenco, D. Phil
Director

Marc Marenco has taught philosophy at Pacific University since 1988.  He has been the Director of the Pacific Institute for Ethics & Social Policy since its inception in 2000.  Marc has an M.Div. degree from Yale University and a doctorate in philosophy from Oxford University.  He was the recipient, along with his colleague Dr. Lisa Sardinia, of a $257,000 National Institutes of Health Ethical, Legal, and Social Issues grant to do public education on genetic science and the ethical, legal and social issues it raises in 2005.  He teaches ethics & policy seminars in nearly every program within the University and is currently working on two three year community based programs called ethics & policy forums (EPF). One continues the focus on the genetic science and technology (every fall), the other explores issues at the intersection of mental health and criminal justice (every spring).  He resides with his daughter Dascha (15), son Paul (8) and foreign exchange student Miyu (16 from Japn) in Forest Grove, Oregon. 

 

Ron Louie

Associate Director for Community Relations

Chief Ron Louie has been in law enforcement for over 28 years. He has commanded the Hillsboro, Oregon, Police Department since 1992. Previously he served 5 years as the Chief of the Astoria, Oregon, Police Department, and 13 years with the Palo Alto, California, Police Department. Chief Louie is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and FBI Law Enforcement Executive Leadership Academy, Quantico, Virginia, and the Oregon Executive Development Institute.He holds a Master in Public Administration degree from Hayward State University, a Master of Arts degree in Anthropology from San Francisco State University, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Science, graduating Magna Cum Laude, from Hayward State University, and an Associate in Arts degree, graduating with Honors, from the College of San Mateo. As a member of the International Police Association, Chief Louie has toured with the former Royal Hong Kong Police force. He is a member of the Oregon Advisory Committee, United States Civil Rights Commission, and sits on the Advisory Boards of the National Asian Peace Officers' Association and the Hillsboro Boys and Girls Club. Chief Louie was responsible for initiating the first racial profiling data collection in the state of Oregon and the collection model and policy developed by the Hillsboro Police Department has been used as a guide in both Washington and Oregon. Chief Louie is a management consultant, published author, and college teacher.

The son of a classic Chinese opera actor, Chief Louie was raised in San Francisco. Labeled a juvenile delinquent after a few brushes with the law, he dropped out of high school and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 16, and he participated in the initial amphibious landing of combat troops in Vietnam. After returning from Vietnam, Chief Louie received his high school GED and continued on to college on the GI Bill. Chief Louie and his wife Jo Anne live in Hillsboro with their two teenage children.

Lisa Sardinia Ph.D

Associate Director for University Relations

Lisa Sardinia is an associate professor in the Department of Biology at Pacific University. She received a B.S. in Biology from Whitworth College, a Ph.D. in Microbiology from Montana State University and a J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Following graduate school, she was awarded a National Cancer Institute research fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco studying molecular genetics before beginning a teaching career that has included stints at San Francisco State University, St. Olaf College, Foothill College and Pacific University. At Pacific University, she teaches Molecular Biology and Microbiology in the College of Arts and Sciences, Basic Science for Optometry in the College of Optometry and Genetics in the Physician Assistant Studies program. She currently holds an endowed chair (the Thomas J. and Joyce Holce Professorship in Science) and recently received the S.S. Johnson Foundation Award for Excellence in Teaching. Her research with students has focused on oculopathogenic bacteria and their response to antibiotics when grown in biofilms, alternative antimicrobial therapies, and genetic analysis of the cytochrome P450 gene of primitive fishes. She is a founding board member of the Pacific Institute for Ethics and Social Policy, and is frequently asked to speak to community groups about the ethics of stem cell research and genetic testing.

Chris Lane

Chris Lane
Director of Technology & Online Learning Environments

Chris Lane has taught Mathematics and Computer Science at Pacific University since 1999. He did his graduate work in mathematics at the University of Oregon and computer science at OGI (Oregon Graduate Institute). In 2005 he joined the Pacific Institute as the Director of Online Technology. In addition to his work with the Institute, in 2006 he received a contract from OHSU to develop an online prostate cancer study and is also actively involved with the AP Calculus program.

Katlyn Haggstrom

Program Assistant

Katlyn is a 1st year student at Pacific's Graduate program for Clinical Psychology. She graduated from Pacific University in Spring 2009 with a major in psychology. Aside from school, she enjoys hiking, and camping, playing with her two dogs and spending time with friends.

Heather Gegenhuber

Intern - Genetics

Heather graduated as co-valedictorian from Roseburg High School in Roseburg, Oregon.  She is currently a junior majoring in Biology at Pacific University, and a member of Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society.  After her undergraduate studies, she would like to attend graduate school to pursue a career in a health-related field.  Currently, she is planning on becoming a pharmacist. During the past summer she assisted in research at Pacific's Pharmacy School, studying pain pathways in the brain and immunohistochemistry techniques.

Aleksandr Kozlov

Intern - Optometry

Born and raised in Russia, Alex moved to the United States when he was 9 years old.  He graduated from Highline Community College in Seattle Washington with an Associates of Arts degree and full presidential honors at the age of 18. Now Alex is a biology major studying as a senior in Pacific University’s undergraduate program. After graduation Alex plans to continue into Pacific University’s excellent Optometry program and eventually open up a private practice in the Seattle area, with a focus on treating patients in the Russian community. Outside of school his favorite activities include volleyball, soccer, working with kids, doing various construction work, and welding.

Sara Hutchins

Intern - Pharmacy

Sara transferred to Pacific University in the Fall of 2007 from Clark College, WA.  She is now a senior majoring in Biology with a minor in Sociology.  She will be pursuing the Doctor of Pharmacy degree in graduate school and then will begin a career as a community pharmacist.  Her goal is to bring high quality health care to rural areas that currently lack access to convenient services.   She plans to later continue her education by earning a Master’s degree in Public Health to assist in her goal of improving community health services.  Sara donates her free time as a Pharmacy Clerk at the Free Clinic of Southwest Washington, providing free services to those who cannot afford basic health care.  She spent last summer volunteering in the inpatient and outpatient pharmacies of the Portland VA Medical Center Vancouver Campus along with evenings at the Free Clinic.  Sara now balances her school schedule with Work Study, and commuting to and from her home in Vancouver, WA.  She enjoys reading and gardening in her free time as well researching the latest health topics and discoveries.

Alyssa Finn

Intern - Occupational Therapy

Alyssa is a senior at Pacific from Salem, Oregon studying exercise science and psychology. After graduation, she plans to pursue a career in occupational therapy. Currently, she works for Pacific's Office of Admissions as a Student Commissioner in addition to her involvement in Hawaii Club, Boxer Ambassadors, and Student Alumni Relations Council. Her favorite activity outside of school is to play and coach volleyball.

Carrie Yap

Intern - Physical Therapy

Carrie, an undergraduate student at Pacific University is from the island of Maui in Hawaii. She is currently a junior majoring in Exercise Science and plans to pursue a career in Physical Therapy. Around campus, she is involved with NHOH aka. Hawaii Club, Pre-Physical Therapy Club, and Exercise Science Club. This past summer, Carrie spent her time observing in various settings of Physical Therapy at home. Outside of school, she enjoys participating in Judo and outdoor activities and sports.

Lisa Chee

Intern - Pharmacy

Born and raised on a tiny island of Honolulu, Hawaii, I chose to attend Pacific University Oregon for my undergraduate studies. I am currently a junior majoring in biology and possibly minoring in chemistry. I am nominated as next year’s Pacific Biology Club Treasurer 2009-2010. I am also involved in other clubs such as the Pacific International Club, Chemistry Club, and NHOH (Hawaii) Club. Last summer, I job-shadowed and volunteered at two different retail pharmacies: one being an outpatient pharmacy in a hospital setting, and another being in a town setting. Last semester, I also worked with Pharmacist Jeff Fortner in the compounding lab at Pacific’s graduate campus. After my undergraduate studies, I plan to attend graduate school to pursue my career goal in pharmacy.
