Ed Dennis, Deputy Superintendent
Ed Dennis, Deputy Superintendent, started working as the Deputy for Superintendent
Susan Castillo at the Oregon Department of Education September 2006.
He oversees management of the Department and is directly responsible for strategic planning and day-to-day operations.
The Superintendent oversees more than half of a million students in over one thousand schools from kindergarten through 12th grade. The Superintendent and her staff are working towards: developing a sustainable program for funding schools, closing the academic achievement gap, creating more opportunities for all students to realize their full potential.
A top priority of the Superintendent upon entering office was to reorganize the Department of Education around a clear mission: Accountability, Leadership and School Improvement. Ed’s daily role includes working closely with the agency leadership, community leaders and the Legislature to advocate for Superintendent Castillo’s priority initiatives, including stable and adequate funding for the k-12 system.
Dennis had been Chief of Staff since Castillo’s election in 2002, managing her transition team as she entered office in 2003. As Chief of Staff, he managed communications and legislative affairs, and he was responsible for the Closing the Achievement Gap conference and Celebrating Student Success banquet. He also established community and stakeholder advisory teams for Superintendent Castillo.
Dennis serves on the Hillsboro City Council where he chairs the Transportation Committee; he serves on the SOLV education sub committee; is active in the Oregon Student Foundation; has taught English as a Second Language classes at Portland Community College and St. Matthews Catholic Church.
Ed was among 40 individuals selected for The Portland Business Journal’s "40 Under 40" Award as one of the most accomplished, influential and civic-minded young executives in Portland. He is also an active member of the Business Education Compact.
Dennis graduated from Western Oregon University in 1992. He and his wife, Elizabeth, live in Hillsboro. They are the parents of two sons.
